Before you hire

What separates a good pool contractor from a callback.

The listings tell you who covers your city. These six checks tell you whether the crew that shows up is insured, licensed for the work and quoting the job you actually asked for.

01

Certificate of insurance

Ask for a certificate of general liability that names you as additional insured for the dates of the work. If the coverage lapsed, a torn liner or a flooded basement lands on your home policy.

02

Current WSIB clearance

Request a clearance certificate and check the date on it, not just that one exists. An injured worker without coverage can leave the homeowner exposed.

03

TSSA registration for gas work

Heater repair, gas valves and line connections require a TSSA-registered gas contractor. Ask for the registration number, then look it up before you book.

04

Itemized written quote

Scope, chemicals, water hauling, disposal of the old liner and HST should each be a line. One lump sum hides exactly what is not included.

05

Deposit against balance

A materials deposit is normal on a liner replacement. Paying the full job before the walkthrough is not. Tie the balance to a filled pool and a finished site.

06

Two local references

Ask for two jobs in your municipality from the last twelve months, then ask what went wrong on them. Every crew has a story; the good ones tell it.

Walk away when you hear

  • "Cash only, no invoice" — no paper trail means no recourse and no HST number to check.
  • A deposit demanded before anyone has seen the pool.
  • A firm liner price quoted without measuring the pool.
  • "We're too small for insurance" — that is the risk you would be carrying.

Not sure who covers your postal code?

Send the job once and we will match it with up to three technicians who work your municipality. Free, and you are never obliged to book.
