Gas heater, heat pump or control fault. Diagnosis first — most heater calls are not a dead heater.

905-633-7263Pool repair pricing looks opaque because four or five separate numbers get folded into one sentence. Split them out and the quotes start making sense.
If a quote is a single number with no breakdown, ask for the five lines. A crew that will not itemise a repair is a crew that will surprise you later.
Detection and repair are separate jobs, and the second one is much bigger than the first. A pressure test or sonic listen runs $350–$650 and tells you where the water is going. Finding it under a patio stone is a$900 repair; finding it under a poured concrete deck pushes past$1,500 because the deck has to be cut and patched.
Do the bucket test first. If the pool loses more than 25 mm a day while a bucket of pool water beside it does not, book detection. Losing less than that in July is usually evaporation plus splashing.
GTA repair price bands
| Service | Typical low | Typical high |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic service callOften credited against the repair if you approve it the same visit — ask before booking. | $95 | $185 |
| Heater repair (ignition, sensor, manifold)Common faults are a flame sensor, pressure switch or a cracked manifold. Parts included. | $350 | $900 |
| Heater replacementGas and heat-pump units are priced differently; load sizing and gas line work move the number. | $2,400 | $5,500 |
| Pump capacitor or motor repairIf the motor hums but will not start, this is usually the fix. | $150 | $380 |
| Pump replacementVariable-speed units sit at the top. Confirm the hydraulic rating matches your filter and plumbing. | $650 | $1,450 |
| Suction air leak or prime faultUsually a pump lid gasket, union or valve. Cheap when found fast, expensive when ignored. | $180 | $450 |
| Filter clean or media changeCartridge clean is the low end, new sand or DE grids the high end. | $120 | $600 |
| Leak detection visitPressure test, sonic listening or a dive call. Detection only — repair is quoted after. | $350 | $650 |
| Leak repair once locatedDeck cutting and patching drive this. A vinyl skimmer replacement sits near the top. | $900 | $2,000 |
| Underwater liner patchOnly sensible on a liner with life left. A patch on brittle vinyl will lift again. | $150 | $400 |
| Skimmer replacementMuch cheaper while the liner is already out for a replacement. | $400 | $900 |
| Green or cloudy water treatmentShock, flocculant, filter clean and a return visit. Leaks and flow faults are separate. | $150 | $400 |
| Salt cell clean or replacementCleaning is the low end; a new cell is the high end and lasts five to seven seasons. | $75 | $900 |
| Pool light or gasket replacementA water-filled niche usually means the gasket, not the fixture. | $250 | $700 |
| Timer, controller or automationMechanical timers sit at the low end; app-controlled panels at the high end. | $350 | $1,800 |

Repair or replace
A repair that buys one season is not a repair. These are the lines most GTA service managers use when they are not chasing a sale.
| Part | Repair makes sense | Replace instead |
|---|---|---|
| Heater | Sensor, pressure switch, ignition or manifold under 8 seasons | Cracked heat exchanger, or repairs past half the cost of a new unit |
| Pump | Capacitor, seal, impeller or motor under 8 seasons | Cracked housing, or a motor that has already been rewound once |
| Filter | Sand or cartridge change, DE grid set, valve gasket | Cracked tank or a body that no longer holds pressure |
| Vinyl liner | One clean puncture on a liner under 8 seasons | Separating seams, floating vinyl, wrinkles that will not flatten |
| Salt cell | Cleaning or a scale removal at 3–5 seasons | No output after cleaning, or a cell past five seasons |
Before you book
None of these require technical knowledge. All five change what you pay.
Heater call in July? Say so on the phone. Same-week slots exist, but the crew needs to know it is urgent before they build the route.
Is the diagnostic fee credited against the repair?
You want a yes, or a fixed number in writing.
Will you confirm the leak before cutting anything?
A pressure test or dive call first — never exploratory deck cutting.
Is the part new, OEM or a substitute brand?
Substitute parts are fine if the warranty and price reflect it.
What does the labour warranty cover?
At minimum the same fault for 30–90 days.
What is the not-to-exceed number?
A ceiling before work starts, so the invoice cannot drift.

Repair FAQ
Losing water right now? The patch vs replace guide covers liner leaks, and Toronto service pricing covers the seasonal side.
A minor fix is $150–$400 and major equipment work runs $2,000 or more, with most calls landing between. A diagnostic visit is $95–$185, technician labour is roughly $100–$200 per hour, and parts are extra. Leak detection ($350–$650) and the repair itself ($900–$2,000) are two separate bills.
Usually yes, $95–$185, and most GTA companies credit it against the repair if you approve the work on the same visit. Ask that question when you book — it is the single easiest thing to confirm before a technician is at your door.
Run a bucket test: fill a bucket with pool water, mark the level, set it on the step and leave it 24 hours. If the pool drops faster than the bucket, you have a leak. Normal evaporation is about 3–5 mm a day; more than 25 mm a day is a leak call.
As a rule, repair while the unit is under 8 seasons old and the fault is a sensor, switch or capacitor. Replace when the heat exchanger or motor housing is cracked, or when the repair quote passes half the price of new equipment. A repaired 12-year-old heater usually fails again within two seasons.
Not on its own. Repair that changes the pool's footprint, the deck or the fence line can trigger a permit, and the enclosure still has to meet your municipality's rules afterwards. Equipment swaps and plumbing repairs under existing decking do not normally need one.
Send the symptom once. Up to three local repair crews reply with a diagnostic fee and a range — free, no obligation.
