Start with the symptom
Gas heater, heat pump or control fault. Diagnosis first — most heater calls are not a dead heater.
Planning band
$95 – $5,500
CAD, before HST · Toronto. Diagnosis can change this.
Detection, parts and labour are separate line items. Ask for all three in writing.
Repair quotes are hard to compare because four or five numbers get folded into one sentence: diagnosis, labour, parts, access and HST. Split them out and two Toronto quotes for the same fault stop looking $800 apart.
Toronto's mix of 1950s bungalows and newer infill means a lot of narrow side yards, gated access and shared driveways. Expect a short access surcharge when equipment has to be carried more than 75 feet.
Access is the line most likely to move in Toronto. A heater in a shed with a clear path is a straight repair; a pump under a low deck in Etobicoke may need deck work before anyone touches the motor. Mention the layout when you book so the diagnostic call is priced for the real job.

Widest planning band for each symptom, CAD before HST. Parts included unless the itemised note says otherwise. Not quotes.
Detection runs $350–$650 and tells you where the water is going. The repair that follows runs $900–$2,000, because decking usually has to be cut and patched. Do the bucket test first: a pool losing more than 25 mm a day while a bucket of pool water beside it holds steady is a detection call.

Before you book
Repair calls go faster when the technician knows the equipment before the visit. None of this needs a manual — a photo of the data plate is enough.
Confirm coverage by postal prefix when you call — M4, M5, M6, M8, M9 are the prefixes listed for Toronto.
Symptoms and timing
When it started, whether it is constant, and the last change you made to chemicals or equipment.
Equipment model
Photograph the heater, pump or filter data plate — brand, model and serial number.
Water test numbers
Free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, stabiliser and salt if applicable. Most shops will test for free.
Access notes
Gate width, deck above the equipment, stairs, and whether the pad is in a shed or exposed to weather.
Prior work
Any recent repair, liner replacement or pump swap. Repeat faults are usually a symptom of the first fix.

Repair FAQ
Every figure on this page is a planning band, not a quote. Diagnosis can change the number, and it should.
Small fixes run $150–$400 and equipment replacement reaches $5,500, with most Toronto calls landing in between. A diagnostic visit is $95–$185, technician labour is roughly $100–$200 an hour, and parts are extra. Leak detection and the repair that follows it are two separate bills.
Listed crews show a median first response of about 35 minutes for Toronto and the surrounding Toronto area. In the swim season, heater and pump calls are usually same-week, not same-day. If water is actively leaking, say so on the phone — that changes the route.
Often, if you approve the work on the same visit. Ask when you book, and get the answer in writing. This is the simplest line item to confirm before a technician is at your door.
Repair while the unit is under eight seasons old and the fault is a sensor, switch, capacitor or seal. Replace when the heat exchanger or motor housing is cracked, or when the repair quote passes half the price of new equipment. A repaired heater past 12 seasons usually fails again within two seasons.
Not on its own. Equipment swaps and plumbing repairs under existing decking do not normally need one. Work that changes the pool footprint, the deck or the fence line can trigger a permit, and the enclosure still has to meet your municipality's rules afterwards.
