Pool pump repair: diagnose it before you replace it

Most dead pumps are a capacitor, a seal or an air leak. Here is what each fix costs in the GTA, how to tell them apart in two minutes, and when replacement is genuinely the cheaper answer.

What a pump repair actually costs

Pump pricing confuses people because three different jobs get called “pump repair”. A capacitor swap is a parts-and-twenty-minutes job. A suction air leak is a hunt. A replacement is a plumbing job with a warranty attached. They are not comparable numbers, and a quote that does not say which one it is cannot be compared either.

  • Diagnosis: $95–$185. Ask whether it is credited against the repair — most GTA shops credit it if you approve the work that visit.
  • Capacitor, seal or impeller: $150–$380. The common outcome when a pump hums instead of starting.
  • Air leak or priming fault: $180–$450. Usually a lid O-ring, union or valve — cheap when found fast, expensive once the motor has been run dry.
  • Replacement: $650–$1,450 installed. Variable-speed units sit at the top and cut hydro use by roughly half.

Two minutes of diagnosis you can do yourself

Before you book anyone, match the symptom to the likely cause. It also tells the technician what to bring, which is the difference between one visit and two.

Where the money actually goes

A pump replacement is priced in four parts: the unit, the unions and plumbing to fit it, the labour, and disposal of the old motor. On a straight swap the unit is most of the bill. On an old installation with seized unions and no isolation valves, the plumbing line grows and the job takes an extra hour — that, not the brand, is why two quotes for the same pump land $300 apart.

If your equipment pad has no valves between the pool and the pump, ask for them to be added during the swap. It is a small add-on that makes every future repair, filter clean and closing a valve turn instead of a drain.

When replacement is the honest answer

Replace when the motor housing or strainer pot is cracked, when the motor has already been rewound once, or when the repair quote passes half the price of new equipment. A motor past twelve seasons that needs bearings will usually need a seal kit and a capacitor within the same year.

Ontario hydro rates make variable-speed the default on any replacement. A single-speed pump runs flat out because it cannot do anything else; a variable-speed unit on a low-speed schedule for most of the day uses roughly half the electricity for the same turnover. Over a Toronto season that difference usually covers the price gap in two to three years.

A pump running dry destroys its seal in minutes. If flow stops, switch the pump off at the breaker before you investigate — not after.

Water level dropping as well? Run the bucket test before booking a leak detection visit.

Pump FAQ

What homeowners ask first

How much does pool pump repair cost in the GTA?

A capacitor or motor repair runs $150–$380, a suction air leak or priming fault $180–$450, and a full pump replacement $650–$1,450 installed, before HST. The diagnostic visit itself is $95–$185 and is often credited against the repair if you approve it the same day.

My pump hums but will not start. Is it dead?

Usually not. A hum with no flow is most often a failed start capacitor, a seized impeller or a jammed shaft — all repairable for a fraction of a new pump. Switch it off at the breaker before anything else: a humming motor that cannot spin overheats its windings and turns a $200 fix into a $900 replacement.

Why does my pump lose prime after cleaning the basket?

Almost always air entering on the suction side. Check the pump lid O-ring and its seating first, then the union on the inlet, then the valve before the pump. A lid gasket that looks fine can still pass air once it hardens — it is the cheapest part in the system and the most common cause.

Repair or replace the pump?

Repair while the motor is under eight seasons old and the fault is a capacitor, seal, impeller or O-ring. Replace when the housing is cracked, the motor has already been rewound once, or the repair quote passes half the price of new equipment. A variable-speed replacement usually pays back on electricity within two or three seasons in Ontario.

Do I need to drain the pool to replace a pump?

No. Close the suction and return valves, isolate the breaker and the pump can be swapped with the pool full. If the valves do not hold, the crew will plug the lines from inside the pool instead — ask which method they plan to use before the visit, because it changes the time on site.
